Inspiration

I was alone at my local bar watching a talented bartender mix a perfect cocktail. Premium spirits, fresh ingredients, meticulous technique – then he threw in cloudy ice from the bin. There's no quicker way to add the flavor of whatever is in the freezer to a drink! It diluted quickly, and looked less than great.

A week later I sat down with an ice formation physicist to find the path to the easiest clear ice at home – true story. That meeting sparked a 3-year obsession.

Science - For Nerds Only

I started by looking at commercial clear ice machines with their electronics and ultrasonics – impractical for your home. Then, nature offered a clue – frozen lakes form clear surface ice through directional freezing. Elegant, but tough to miniaturize. The challenge? Water expands 8% when freezing, pushing outward with tremendous force and distorting cubes. Most clear ice makers attack this with three & four-part systems, or lids that slow freezing and prevent you from monitoring the freeze.

Through design iteration we got to a breakthrough – a proprietary pressure equalization system, along with a controlled temperature gradient to handle this expansion. It's only two parts, nothing complex, and no lid. We spent three more years creating and refining functional prototypes until we had the confidence to offer a polished product that makes beautiful clear ice - easily.

Joseph Myers

is a professional filmmaker, entrepreneur, and product designer. He is a partner in storyshop films and has directed many large-scale nationally broadcast documentaries. He is a founding partner of Nittany Mountain Distillery. As a product designer, Myers is the principal of movingimage llc. He works with a team, including two internationally recognized artists and designers, an engineer, and a business manager.

Stephanie Ayanian

has long experience successfully shepherding $500k-$1m projects from inception, through development & fundraising, production, and distribution. Ayanian is a business management consultant, an educator, a film and television producer, and partner at storyshop films.

Tim Berg and Rebekah Myers

are artists, designers and educators. As a studio art collaborative they have participated in multiple solo and group exhibitions in the US, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea, Qatar and Kuwait. Their work is included in numerous private and public collections including The National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, WY, the Biedermann Museum in Germany and The Betty Woodman Collection at the University of Colorado. Berg is a Professor of Studio Art at Pitzer College.
